Hello! My name is Hugo, and I am a graphic designer from Portugal. I developed a passion for design at a very young age, as my father worked in some of the largest print shops in the country. During my college years, I had the opportunity to work on various projects, and I was recognized by my peers and teachers for my commitment and eagerness to learn.
In addition to my love for design, I have always been involved in volunteering and activism since a very young age. As such, I frequently embark on personal projects that are related to these fields. This allows me to merge my passion for design with my commitment to making a positive impact on society.
As a graphic designer, I believe that design can be used to convey powerful messages and evoke emotions. My goal is to seek new challenges and opportunities to grow as a designer and as a person.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me, and I look forward to potentially collaborating with you in the future!
In 2021, I participated in the Now You See Me Moria call to action as a designer, creating posters showcasing the dire conditions of the Moria Camp. Today, I feel proud to be part of the international exhibition at Porto's Aliados and Marquês Metro stations. During the event, I emphasized the project's impact and our strong connection between design and activism at Lusófona University of Porto. I concluded by highlighting that Design without people is like an empty museum; as designers, we must collaborate to address global issues. Notable participants included Noemi, Carla Cadete, Marco Ferreira, and Raul Manarte.
In 2023, ULP's Communication Design third-year students organized an event called Forms, aimed at sharing design professionals' experiences. Renowned designers Paula Laranjeira, Joana Machado, and Atelier D'Alves delivered captivating talks. Additionally, Professor Pedro Amado conducted a two-day workshop titled "Introduction to Variable Font Design with Fontlab 8." Throughout the event, my course-related posters were exhibited, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
In 2022, my friend Pedro Saboya and I joined the Reply Creative Challenge, a 48-hour competition open to students and creatives worldwide. The challenge involved responding to creative briefs from renowned brands, judged by experts. We decided to participate in the Local Activation category, focusing on a brief from Red Bull. Although our project didn't win, it made it to the top 5, marking a significant achievement.
I'm delighted to share that I have received a Recognition award from the University Lusófona of Porto. On March 24th, alongside Pedro Saboya, I was honored with this prestigious award, recognizing our exceptional performance in the Reply challenge. This accolade serves as a strong motivation to continue striving for excellence and making meaningful contributions to my field. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the University Lusófona of Porto for this incredible honor.
As part of the Now You See Me Moria project and the Humans Before Borders collective, I participated as a designer in 2021. In an interview with Jornalismo Porto Net, I shared insights and experiences related to this significant initiative. Furthermore, my created poster was included in the Action Book and exhibited in various galleries worldwide. Noteworthy locations for these exhibitions include Athens, Berlin, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Oxford, Paris, Rome, Porto, Lisbon, and Amsterdam.
I'm thrilled to have contributed to a remarkable motion graphics workshop that united three Portuguese universities. The workshop aimed to create diverse interpretations of the Tate Museum collection, specifically tailored for Porto. Drawing inspiration from the kinetic art pieces at Tate, I developed an engaging animation. It was an incredible experience, and more details about the project will be shared soon.
